Roi Bachmutsky

Professional Background

I am a licensed attorney with nearly a decade of experience advancing accountability for human rights violations, grave breaches of international humanitarian law, and international crimes. I specialize in international investigations, strategic human rights litigation, and corporate accountability.

My work focuses on holding accountable powerful actors — particularly multinational corporations and senior executives — for their complicity in human rights abuses and international crimes. I have expertise in navigating transnational legal frameworks, conducting complex investigations, and deploying strategic litigation to stop abuses, access effective remedy, and advance the law toward just outcomes.

Current Position

I currently serve as Legal Advisor and Researcher at Amnesty International, where I manage the organization's Corporate Crimes Project. In this capacity, I provide expert legal analysis on the application of international criminal law, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law to business operations worldwide. My work includes authoring reports, legal briefs, and policy documents; managing a network of legal practitioners; and developing trainings and capacity-building initiatives for civil society and law enforcement.

Professional Journey

Before joining Amnesty International, I served as co-Founder and Managing Director of the Global Echo Litigation Center, where I led our strategic litigation program targeting multinational corporations and senior executives for complicity in war crimes in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT). This work involved managing our docket of cases, overseeing complex transnational investigations, drafting criminal complaints across multiple jurisdictions, and engaging with prosecutors at both international tribunals and domestic war crimes units.

Earlier in my career, I worked with the International Criminal Court's Office of the Prosecutor, the Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA), and the human rights organization Breaking the Silence.

Approach and Values

My approach to human rights work is grounded in a commitment to rigorous legal analysis and investigations, strategic thinking, and collaborative engagement. I believe in the power of law as a tool for social change, while remaining realistic about its limitations. I strive to combine meticulous legal research with creative problem-solving, always keeping the perspectives and needs of affected communities at the center of my work.

Throughout my career, I have been driven by a belief that no actor — regardless of their power or resources — should be above the law. I recognize that this vision may appear ever more distant today, but I also know, in Margaret Mead's words, that "a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world." This conviction motivates my ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability mechanisms, build the capacity of practitioners and communities, and advance the development of international law in service of human rights and justice.
